Recently i have noticed a lot of threads to do with tropheus. Today i saw a couple in my LFS and they looked really cool.

Just wondering if anyone could give me some more information on these fish?

thanks

Bigger the better. Also groups of 3 are not likely to work, especially as I doubt they've been reliably sexed. 10 or 12 in a four foot seems to be a good starter. Having said that I kep 4 in with my mbuna, and that worked well for the year or so I kept them, though I never bred them.
I moved house recently , and gave away all those fish (or swapped them for a load of instant ocean). I don't miss any of the malawis, but I really, really miss the Tropheus duboisi - they really are the best of the lakes cichlids, though I'm not really sure why- character I guess. If I can get them cheap again (I got mine at auction, and suggest you try that too), I will probably try with them again, this time by themseleves.

I had a good look at info for these fish recently - there are a lot of things you really need to know before you try your hand at keeping them

The best url I can give you is -
http://www.cichlidae.com/tropheus/docs/articles.html

It's a link page to a handfull of info sites on keeping Tropheus - I strongly suggest you read every linked page on there - opinions differ on several points

Wayne is correct. Its best to get a large group of them. They need at least a 55gallon tank, but a 75 is much better. your best bet is to buy a large group (15-20) juvies and as they mature, pull out the extra males. I have a wild caught group of Mpulungu that are just awesome to watch. Theyre always active :) But theyre also very susceptible to bloat. I keep a close eye on all of them everytime I feed them to make sure everyone is eating.

No please don't get Tropheus if you've only a 20g, I tried and failed with 1m and 2f Tropheus duboisi in a 35g.......they had been in a much larger tank with frontosa, malawis, convicts and some very large catfish and I got them for nothing. But it just doesn't work - fantastic fish though......one day.......

You will never have algae problems in a tropheus tank! They just demolished hair algae! Great. I think I was kind of lucky that my 4 got along, though I think tank raised duboisi are a lot mellower than moorii. I never found bloat to be a problem, though I never did with mbuan either, and I wasn't as fussy as some about diet - however I think top quality water, with lots of changes, good diet with lots of algae and NOT using NaCl to 'raise pH' are the keys to success.
I absolutely love verse's fish, and am really tempted by moorii again, especially the cherry spot.... next time I'd get a 4 foot tank plus, and big rounded boulders, not much substrate and a bog, big cannister
