So I've read several disease flow-charts and here is the situation:

A couple months ago a female adult platy began loosing weight, hiding in the bottom of the foliage, and got a slight downward curve in her spine. I separated her from the others, but she died a couple days after that. I wasn't sure what caused it, but went through a couple disease flow charts and since her symptoms were sudden and not too specific, I wasn't too worried, but I did notice that tuberculosis came up more than once.

Well today I come in to work, I've got a male platy dead at the bottom of the tank, and a female platy swolen with the 'pine-cone' look. Everyone else (1 pleco, 7 dalmation mollies, 6 pristella tetras, 2 more platy) all look fine, so I got rid of the dead one, who had no physical indications of why he died, and flushed the bloated one just becuase she was already splitting open.

So looking at the disease pages and flow charts again, I see tuberculosis coming up more than once! When the first one died a couple months ago, I posted and got a mixed response saying it was not common or that if the dead one was gone, I shouldn't have a problem.

I'm starting to get a little worried about this, since the pages I've read say that if it is tuberculosis, it can be spread to humans. If I treat for tuberculosis, will it harm my other fish? Should I do a general treat for dropsy or something like that first? Will temp fluctuations make it worse? The tank ususally drops to 74/76 during the nights and stays around 82 during the day based on the building's heat system.

you should quarantine the sick fish, and be sure that you are very careful about contact. I do believe that fish TB can be transmitted to humans....so i would wear some gloves, or be very sure to wash your hands very well with antibacterial soap after coming in contact with anything in the tank....

treating for dropsy is pretty much useless, because once the symptoms of dropsy appear, it is too late to do anything about it.

temp fluctuations, i don't think it would harm the fish too bad, but considering they are tropical, i'd go get a cheap heater just so that it stays stable.

How big is your tank? What could have happened, is that if you do have a smaller tank, keeping 16 fish in it may be a bit overstocked....and the build up of ammonia/nitrates/etc could help speed along a disease.

I don't know how big your tank is, so that theory could be completley wrong... ANYWAY, hopefully you can figure out what is going on with the fish!

It's a 29 gal, all levels are within normal limits.

And I actually have an expensive heater in the tank, it just can't keep up at night when the building heat shuts down and the air temp is in the 50's.

How many watts is the heater?

If I really did think I had a dose of fish TB I would be tempted to treat for it aggressively with Furan or another very powerful bactericide, and that certainly includes a tank breakdown as well. you might want to do some reading around the subject at www.wetwebmedia.com (use the search feature, look for tuberculosis)

Best of luck
