I had an ad up on Craigslist for a while requesting a cheap heater for one of my 10gal tanks. I got a couple heaters for free, but one of them doesn't work (which angers me as it was the nice Marineland one) and the other did work for a while before deciding to super-heat the water to 90-100F (luckily there weren't any fish in the tank at the time and I waited until the temperature went down to a respectable level after removing that heater before replacing it with a different one I got at a thrift store that works perfectly). Anyway, I got a response from a lady that had a 50W submersible heater that she'd sell me for $5. I immediately said yes (since I was down to one heater and have two 10gals) and went to pick it up today. I wasn't paying much attention between ogling her son's SW setup and some random aquaria parafinalia she had lying around that looked like it needed a home, but I just got home and went to clean the heater. It's not a 50W, it's a 200W! This is probably WAY too much for my 10gal, right? If it is too big for the 10gal, would it be okay on my new 40gL that's going to get set up in the next couple of days so it can start cycling?

On to the light question...At the same house mentioned in the above question, the lady had a really nice T5 fixture sitting in her living room. It was 48" long. I commented on how I wanted something like that for my 40gL because right now I'm going to have to put my 36" fixture from the 46gal on the 40gL, which is 48" long. She said that one of the bulbs was burnt out, but she believed her son wanted to sell it. We plugged it in and indeed one of the two dual bulbs was burnt out. However, the bulbs were configured for SW (with the regular flourescent and the blue bulb), not FW like my tank is going to be (which I believe uses the regular flourescent and a pinkish bulb?). Could the SW bulbs be replaced in that fixture to make it FW planted tank friendly?

I can only comment on your light, sorry...

depends on the fixture. I bought a coralife T-5 HO fix with two 10000K marine bulbs. I simply stashed those in my basement and ordered the appropriate 6700K T-5s. T-5s are the same for any T-5 fixture so all you need are two replacement bulbs (they're relatively* not expensive.) I recommend Life-Glo 6700K bulbs. forget the 6500K and rosette bulbs...I had those on my 40 gal and ended up stashing them in my basement too and switching to 6700Ks.

Good good! It's not a definite on getting the fixture yet (have to sell my wedding dress and then see how much they want for the fixture), but I wanted to get an idea so that I wasn't interested in something that wouldn't be of any use to me. KWIM? But, I will see what kind of fixture it is (brand) and plan accordingly if I do buy it. THanks!

A stronger heater will probably just click on and off more possible wearing out sooner. But if the thermostate works properly it will maintan the right tempature no matter how many watts.

And yes 200watts will be plenty for the 40. I have a 300watt on my 75gal and it is 15 degrees above room temp

Thanks, epond! You actually answered my next question since that one heater is still wanting to super-heat my water no matter what I do. It's very frusterating because it didn't do this when I had it in my other 10gal and the one that is almost identical (same set up, just different brand) works just fine. Since I'm putting the 200W in the 40gL, I could put the 150W that was in the 46gal (figured out that it works just fine, it's just a submersible heater) and it would be fine. If it wears out, oh well, since it's just a temporary fix anyway and I won't be needing the 150W heater for a larger tank any time in the forseeable future.
