Undergravel Filter Air Diffusers

Are undergravel air diffusers necessary? I was just wondering, because changing them every month adds up. Would pumping air from the air pump straight into the uplift tube be harmful or cause too much vibration? They do it at pet stores sometimes, but I'm not sure. A little help?!

Under gravel filters do not work very well; they collect lots of crap under them and need to be cleaned often. As for your question, the air pump is just for extra circulation and extra surface movement. If your filter creates enough surface agitation, you don't need an air pump.
