Recently I've just received a new fish tank, about 35 gallons I believe, and I've always wondered about the under gravel filter. I've never actually bought it for my 10 Gallon tank but I've actually really considered it for my 35. But I don't really have much knowledge about it, and I'm just wondering if anyone here can explain how to use it and how it works, thank you very much.

I haven't used an undergravel filter in 20 or more years, so can't help you on that.

If you could post the size in inches of your aquarium, we can find the gallons it contains. Very helpful to know as you progress in keeping healthy/happy fish in it.

When I started up with fishkeeping ten months ago after a 15 year hiatus, lots of things in terms of the science and convenience had changed. The UGF (undergravel filter) that used to be a staple in my fish-keeping world is now apparently very old-school, and some of the newer technologies will not be compatible with that kind of filtration system.
But the basic idea, IIRC, is that the filter plates (which are nothing more than raised plastic mesh) are laid on the bottom of the tank, and the gravel laid over top. The gravel itself acts as an initial filter medium; the water gets sucked through the gravel, the crappy stuff and dirty water is theoretically trapped under the filter plates that lie beneath the gravel substrate, and fresh water is transferred up and out of the plastic posts attached at each corner of the tank from under the gravel, with a small cotton/charcoal filter in each post.
As much as people on this forum say that your local fish store (LFS) may have bad advice, it might be worth your while to go to your LFS, check out the different filtration systems they have, take notes and come back to this forum to ask for more specific directions based on what you envision doing with your new tank.

up until recently I used undergravel filter racks to feed into my hang on back filters, but my newest filter is not compatible with my old rack and tube system. I used the 2 together to essentially " double filter" my water and also to keep baby fish from getting sucked into the filter.

Don't bother with UGF. You'll just spend more time vacuuming your gravel. I still have the platform under my gravel but I've sealed the holes where the plastic tubes would go. I wonder what's growing underneath l:rolleyes:l.
