My Mother who is visiting from NC, discoverd a fry in my Tanganyikan tank today! I thought she had seen some kind of aquatic bug that had somehow gotten into the tank. But lo and behold, there was a fry. Upon closer inspection there was a single fry about an 1/8 inch flittering around in the slate I used to make caves. It is a crossbred between my Julidochromis Marlieri and my Julidochromis Transcriptus. I thought I had gotten a single male of both when I bought them. Well I guess not, huh. Anyway being that I though It was a bug of some sort, the fry is now affectionately refered to as Bug. He/she looks very strong and not deformed in anyway, so if he/she makes it I guess I'll have one extra tanganyikan in the 66gal.

I have read that transcriptus gombi is considered a dwarf marlieri so the cross is not entirely unknown.

Well cool to have fry Paul but julies are usually damn good parents, have they not been defending a territory avidly since pairing up? I have transcriptus fry myself at the moment, they are secret spawners but in every other fish's face if they come near their cave.

I had not noticed any mating behavior, but I thought I had only males in my tank. So I wasn't really looking for any eather. Guess that goes to prove that i'm not as good at sexing fish as I thought.

heh thats cool :) I was upset with my lfs guy because he wouldn't sell me just one female guppy "I can only sell them in pairs!" so I bought a pair. Then after I let them loose in the tank and was watching them....I realized that the "male" he gave me is actually a FEMALE! lol I asked a few different people and they agreed...so now I'm not mad at the lfs anymore cuz I got what I wanted w/o them knowing. (course I don't know why I didn't notice it was a female at the store...guess her tail is just bigger than most females and she's younger so not fat like a lot of females)
