Well I have a peculiar situation in my tank. In consecutive days I have awoke to find a dead tetra. The fist day it was a lemon tetra I had for months. The second day it was a neon tetra. Both fish had been eating well with all the others and displayed no signs of sickness. Each morning after finding the fish I did quick water parameter checks and found that ammonia was 0, nitrite was 0, and the temperature had not fluctuated even a degree. I cannot figure out for the life of me what has happened and I fear waking in the morning. I take EXTREMELY good care of the aquarium and have never had fish death before. Can this happen? Can fish just die? I am really sad and it has made me fear a complete tank disaster. I was just hoping maybe someone would read this and have a similiar story or some advice to share. I bought replacements for the schools. Probably not a good idea I know but I humanize fish too much and felt they missed there friends. Anyway, even if you just took the time to read this I appreciate it. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about that. Sometimes fish die for no apparent reason. Many smaller tetras naturally have a short life span. If there are no outward signs of disease, there is virtually nothing that can be done.

Sometimes I fear waking up, but that is because it means I have to go to work. But, come to think of it, I think I fear not waking up more.

Thanks Turbine Surgeon I really appreciate your reply. I do also fear waking to angry middle school children but that is a different story. I did some research tonight and found something called neon tetra death but my fish was displaying beautiful colors and they say that the neon is usually less colorful. I heard about the short life span. It seems that all the fish I have, have short life spans, blue rams, tetras, platys etc. Except for my pleco who will eventually grow out of my tank. I will have to commit myself with the rams go, I have become so attached to those guys. Well thanks for the reply.

Hi Dss.

I also have/had your problem regarding mystery neon tetra deaths. I've concluded that the neons are purposely holding there breath in some foolish fish game. One possibility, oxgen depletion? Otherwise i'm sitting in your boat without a paddle (can't help).

RIP 6 neons. Live long and prosper the 2 remaining.
