Use colored glass vases as decorations killing fish?

I just inherited my mom's angelfish and set up a 55 gal tank. A few days after setting up the tank and no problems with the fish, I added (carefully cleaned) actual red glass vases as decorations and the fish didn't seem to mind them at first. But 24 hours later, one fish was dead and the rest were all hovered in the furthest corners. I took out the vases immediately and added some water conditioner (the stuff you use to take out the chlorine in tap water, but I have very good, pure well water so I didn't think it was necessary when I first set up the tank), the next day the fish seemed to be back to normal, but 1 more died and a couple days later another. Could this just be coincidence or is there a chance there's lead in the glass or something that leached into the water? (I'd really like to put those pretty red vases back in, or a collection of other colored-glass vases I have - btw, it actual colored glass, not that cheap glass with a colored coating on it).

Was it a newly set up tank, or just moved?

If it was totally newly set up from scratch more or less, it could be a cycling problem instead. Did you test it for ammonia & nitrites?
