You could do powerhead, but it'd need to come on then off then on then off then on....so frequently that its not worth it. I'd just use timers for the stuff that can be turned off for longer periods of time like lights.

I have my powerheads (2 maxijets) on a timer that alternates the pumps like a wavemaker other than that only my lights are on timers.
