The wife says no way to a noisy tank in the living room. After hearing the mechanical noise emitting from the new Emperor400 on the back of the new 60gal tank, I've been sent back to the old drawing board.

What can I do to make the filtration system dead silent?

It is on a large enclosed stand so there is room underneath for filter options.

Should I use a canister? Sump? Inline pump or submersible? What kind?

Help!! My Pl*cos is getting too big for his current tank.

For the filter pick up a canister. They are silent and go w/ a good reliable company eheim is a good one from what I've heard. Cost more then others but is more reliable.
As for the pleco see if a lfs will take him. He will only get larger.

Canister is a good option. Ehiem classic line gets my pic since thats what i run on one of my tanks. Rena canisters are also a great deal, can't go wrong with either brand.

Lol, I had the same reaction from the first two emperor 280's i tried on my 29 gal tank. People were telling me to adjust the intake... move this... move that... nothing. The noise would drown out the tv in the same room. I switched to a penquin 330 and the difference in noise was between night and day. There was still some water splashing noise but the drone of the motor was a soft wimper compared to the Emperor.

Aquaclears are also great filters but a little flimsy in construction. Its definitely the most cost effective way to go since there are no cartiges to replace monthly, and the price of the filter itself is very cheap.
