IF , and it's a big if, they're big enough and the flow is right they'll kill anything that goes through them.
I don't have one, and for standalone tanks I don't think they're worth it. If you have a shop system the water flow makes them more useful.
Some thionk them invaluable, some don't. I don't, it's up to you. But I'd save the money as you will have plenty of big bills anyway.... (skimmer et al)

i definitely agree with wayne here...my perspective on UV sterilizers is that they are one more gee-gaw the LFS tries to foist on customers who really just want to do what is "best" for their tank...even though the contraption doesn't really do much for you
