I will be gone from wednesday night until sunday and so will have no way to feed the fish...I know they sell those little pyramids (or shells, or whatever) that are supposed to be time release...anyone have any experience with this? Would I be better to get an automatic feeder?

i see you live in L.A. too. where in L.A.? i live down south of downtown L.A. in Lawndale next to Torrence.

well i dont have any experience with these pyramids(auto feeders) but ive heard they work. youll just have to make sure you change the water before you put them in because to me thats a long time since i do smaller frequent water changes. try to reduce the temperature so the fish wont eat it like crazy and poop all over the place making the decomposing wastes make the water dangerous with ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.thats about it and if you have anymore questions just post them.

i tried one of those pyramid feeders. it killed 2 out of 5 of my fish, and as far as i could tell, none of them actually ate the tiny amount of "food" embedded in that massive amount of white chalky stuff.

i wouldn't really risk it, IME. wednesday night to sunday is only really 3-4 days, my fish have always been ok not being fed for a few days. but those pyramid things...i dunno. :) i just won't ever go near them again, that's for sure.

I'd be warry of those feeders. I know I wouldn't put something like that in my tank without food so... Here's something I'd recommend though. Get a little fish bowl, one of those little tiny ones they sell bettas in, put some live tubifex worms in it and put in on the bottom of the tank tilted so that fish can swim in and eat. I wouldn't worry about 3-4 days without feeding however.

I got an automatic feeder from Walmart few weeks ago. It costed about $10. It tried it for a weekend and it worked fine.
It should be safer than the pyramid feeder since you can control what kind of food and how much to feed.
