The wife got rid of the qt tank a while ago since it was empty and I wasn't really planning on getting more fish. Then the week before last I caved and got my danio a proper school. I didn't have the qt tank, so, despite careful selection at the lfs, I netted my fish into the tank after acclimation. Well, a few days later, I notice one of them has ick. I up the temps and add salt. Then I have cycle issues because if the new fish (not too bad, but I over-did it with the number added at once and ammonia spiked a bit... Now all under control). Now that all that is fixed, and I have a few hours before I have to be at work, I notice that the ick has spread to the existing fish. Grrr! I'm going to keep up with the med-less route for treatment right now, but how long should I give it? also, what else can I use that would not be harmful to the shrimp in the tank in case the salt, higher temps don't work. Will they be affected by melafix? Will that even work on ick? I hadn't had any ick that seemed resistant to the more natural treatment before

Also, crazy guppy in the gourami tank has disappeared. I can't find him or his body anywhere. I know he was there monday night.... Part of me is hopeful he is just hiding really well, but part of me thinks he died and was eaten :( I was really write attached to him.

Hello; After a few such similar incidents I now do not buy fish without a QT. I had to put drywall where my stand and QT sat and was down to one tank. It took me many weeks to break down the tanks and finish the drywall and I did not get any new fish during the time. I now have a second tank running and a QT. I put new fish in last week for the first time in several months.
I usually keep my QT filled with some floating plants and a few snails so it is ready when I get new fish. I have a sponge filter with a split sponge that can be tossed into the QT if I get more than a few fish.
Good luck.

The temp thing can take a week to a few weeks. I have not seen salt help any of my out breaks in the past. Keep the temp up to about 84-86-ish, raise it slow. Keep doing daily vac of the substrate to rid the parasite. If you can be more persistent then the parasite you WILL WIN!!!! The temp thing always worked for me, always.

Thanks. I will keep the temp thing up. I have an air pump going, plus the 2 filters causing quite a bit of bubble action. I also have quite a few plants, so I hope that is enough. I want to some day get sat tank going again. Till then, no more fish.
