I don't have any experience with that fish but I do have a pleco, and i know that alot of the pleco's and large catfish tend to be more nocturnal, it also depends on the tank, how it's setup and how many other fish there are is there another fish that is bullying it? I have a big gourami that likes to chase everyone else around the tank and I had to get a cobalt blue lobster to get him in line hahahaha now the lobster eats fish once in awhile and actually ate some of my center piece fish so I now stock some minnows for him to knaw on

What sized aquarium is it kept in? Is the tank cycled?

They are nocturnal and usually very shy anyway. If it might fit in its mouth, it will eat it, so be careful if there are other fish in the tank you don't want to lose.

The more hiding places it has, the more often you will see it. Not likely that it will be out cruising the tank to be seen unless you've fed the tank recently. Blackwater extract can stain the water and make them feel more at home, as will floating (live or fake) plants to difuse the lighting.

he was out today when i fed them i used tetramin tropical crisps and he came up to the top and grabed one, then (as this food sinks when it hits the water discharge from my filter it swam around the bottom grabing some with the other fish.2 dwarf gouramis and a platty and kuhli loach) none of them seemed to mind each other. it shares its hidng spot with my black kuhli loach and they seem to be good room mates too.
maybe he will come around more and more as time goes on
