I'm looking to buy or construct a very small filter for a 2.5 gallon planted aquarium. Even a small air pump connected to a sponge fitler is a little too rowdy in that aquarium. I'm looking for something a little more low key. Any ideas on where to shop for one oneline or plans for making small DIY filters? Thanks muchly.

I know penplex has an air driven one that is a sponge/carbon type thing, but you said that was too rowdy. The only other type of filter I can think of is a UGF.

If you don't want such a small volume of water so disturbed you might want to put a sump on it. That sounds a little bit much, but I can't think of any way you're going to get filtered water without an air pump.

I prefer to use the Whisper HOB type filters in my other aquariums. Ideally, I would like to find a way to purchase or construct one very similar to that. Smaller size & output though. I went to the surplus store yesterday and was looking at little electric motors and diaphragms, trying to figure out a way to construct one.

I got a 2.5 gal for a hospital tank at WAL-MART last year and I got a HOB type of filter with it.  It is the smallest Whisper they make I believe.  Works great.

I think it was < $10 also

Hope this helps
