Do you have adequate hiding places for him? Does he swim around with the smaller clowns, or does he stick to himself? How much smaller are the small ones?

Clowns may take a while to become completely comfortable in new surroundings. It's natural for their color shades to change when the lights are on and off. Start leaving the light on more often and he should get used to it if there's places to hide or shade himself. The presence of other clowns should ease him, but since he's considerably larger than the others they may not be interacting much.

I have one clown loach whose stripe are so pale he looks nearly transparent. He got stuck inside a hollow piece of wood and ever since he's been pale like that. Try feeding with the lights off if you're worried he isn't getting enough to eat and the more hidey holes the better. :)
