I want to start a cichlid tank, but I live in Canada and fish tanks are quite expensive here. At my LFS a 50 Gallon Hagen Tank (I think AllGlass makes Hagen Tanks?) with hood and stand costs about $500 and that's without filters, heaters, gravel, decortations etc. However, at My local Walmart they have a 55 Gallon tank with hood, heater, filter etc. for about $300. I know that the filter and heater aren't that great, but I have a friend with an AC 500 so it's not that big of a deal. I have also been looking in the classified ads for quite some time, but there are no deals to be found. Most tanks are only slightly cheaper than new so it makes more sense just to buy a new tank. I was just wondering if anyone knows who makes Walmart's Tanks, or if anyone has had any experience with them. Are they good? Should I just save more and get the Hagen?

The 3 10 gallon tanks I bought at walmart were all-glass aquarium co., so I would imagine that the 55 would be too.
Take a peek at it, It should have it on the tank somewhere, a sticker or something.

At the Wal-Mart near me, they are selling a 55g with hood and stand for $199 which is a good price. That's where I'll get my next 55g.....and I have bought a 5g, and a 10g from them too and both tanks were fine. Go for it!!!;)

Ok. Thanks a lot everybody. Hmmmm. I am not sure if it'll be worth getting the 55 over a 33 as they are the same width. A for the stand, I can build one pretty much for free as I have a few connections to a local lumber mill. I dunno though. I might just get the a 33g hagen starter and save a bit of money. (the kits cost about the same, but I would have to change the filter and heater). From what I've heard walmart tanks are generally ok, but I'd still have to swap out the heater and filter. This would cost me $125-$225 here in Canada. Thanks for the input though; more is always welcome if anyone has input on what tank I should be buying. Thanks a bunch!

yes, the 55 is the biggest they have, at least where I am. They do have stands for them but you have to put them together. They aren't that bad either, all black with four cabinet doors. The tank kit and the stand cost me $230 altogether...my last 55 was one I got from Walmart. There was nothing wrong with it either...I liked it.

Just scored a 29gal. tank from Wal Mart for $89 (and some change). They included the 30-60 Aqua-Tech filter. Is that a mistake on the company's part? The kit says the filter should be the 20-40. A good deal for me, either way.

Is the 30-60 Aqua-Tech a good filter? I was gonna hook up a Penguin 170 too. Now, I may not have to....:D
