Water Change Size ?

Water changes wont take beneficial bacteria out of the tank unless you also wash all of your gravel and filter media etc because most bacteria is not free floating in the water, it is attached to things in your tank. I would agree with maha though, 40% would work for today.

I always did 100% water changes on my small 1gal tank (actually it was a glass bowl/vase thing) because it didn't have a filter. The bacteria is on the glass and gravel and any ornaments you might have. :)

Water changes won't hurt the cycle at all especially in a tank that small. TBH I have never actually witnessed a 'cycle' in any of my small tanks. Whats the point in stressing out the fish with ammonia and nitrites if you don't have to? :)
