I was wondering, can you ever do too many water changes? I'm not talking about weekly 50% or anything like that... I was thinking more a long the lines of, is it too much to do a 25% water change every three or so days? Would that eliminate an ammonia spike because it lets the bacteria build up slowly without the huge ammonia flucuation? Maybe I'm totally off base, but can you ever do too many water changes?  ???  ???

discusaquarium may know, i'm sure he has to frequent h20 changes for his discus...i've never heard of too many h20 changes, unless ph and temp are way off causing too much stress on fish...good luck  :)

I myself do a 50% weekly. The fish love it, the plants pearl O2. I'm thinking of doing 30% twice weekly to see what happens.

CHeck the PH and other readings. Try it and see what happens. Too much will cause probs because the bacteria won't have a chance to establish new colonies, but it will also remove nasty toxins.

I dont understand what you mean here. What bacteria need to establish new colonies? Why do they need to establish new colonies?

I read about people who do a partial everyday.(not just breeders), and others that do huge 75 to 90% every week or every other.

I like a 35% to 40% on my tanks with alot of fish every tuesday. I do less for my planted tanks like 25% every week, and 50% for the q-tank every other.

I dont think too many partials is a problem, unless you do a lot of big ones everyday.  ;)

If I were you I would do a 50% every week or so too. That's what I do and my tank is great. Or you could do like a 25% twice a week or so. Good luck. Try it and test your parameters and see how it all turns out. ;D

[glow=Navy, strength, width]YOU CAN NEVER EVER EVER EVER DO TOO MANY WATER CHANGES!!!!!!!![/glow]

if you plan to do multiple water changes a week, just watch the water qualities and try and keep them the same. other than that it's perfectly fine to do a water change every day...but not like a 99% water change...just use common sense there...stress on fishies!!

Well, please prep the water if you want to do lots of water changes. You can get a rubbermaid bin from walmart or whoever, a heater and a powerhead, and let the water reach the right temperature as your main tank and aerate. Use a dechlorinator as well, the cheapest one you can buy, because the more expensive ones contain extra ingredients that are worthless, and it some cases can even do harm.
