Water changes

When you guys change your water and add new chemicals... do you add enough for the actual water you are changing or for the total water in the tank?

If i change 5gallons of water i've just been treating with enough for 5gallons.

Is it the same for plant fertilizer? Or do you put enough for the total water in the tank?

What kind of treatment? For meds, follow the directions to the letter.
For dechlorinator, use the amount for the water you're adding to the tank.
For ferts, add for the whole tank, according to the schedule on the ferts, or as dictated by your test kit readings.
