Water heater, thermometer, pre-filter sponge, and water hardness

What is the best affordable heater for a 6gallon Fluval Edge tank? And thermometer? Would a pre-filter sponge be necessary for Red Cherry Shrimp?

I have a water softener, and I heard that shrimp like hard water. What products are out there that can help me out with this? Is it necessary to add chems to soft water for shrimp?

I would put SOMETHING over the intake of the filter to prevent shrimp from bring sucked up inside.

Do you have naturally soft water or is your water put through a water softener?

I guess I can order this for the intake. I wonder if I can find it at a LFS, hmmm....
