Yes.
It wont remove the total disolved solids in the water. It replaces the calciums and such with sodium. Still the same hardness for the fish. The soft water your Rams would perfer need less disolved solids in it.

To do this you would need to use reverse osmosis water or distilled mixed with your own.

Another way is to filter with peat but not sure how much peat you would need for it effects to work. Also some peat will tint your water.

The pillow is a waste of money in my opinion.

I tryed peat on my 75 gal. had about 2 cups in a filter sock inside my fluval, Water was at the top of the pH test about 7.6 after a month it never came down. Not sure how long it should take, how much, or if maybe my water was higher then 7.6

That was the next thing I was going to try, peat moss in my filter. Hopefully I have better results... Did it turn your water really brown and tea colored?

no my water didn't turn at all, i think i might have had not enough. But mainly i think the mess might have been too fine and i packed it too much to get any flow through it. It wasn't something i was too worried about so i just dropped the whole thing. It was for my turtle and i have to change her water a lot cause they are messy so yeah didn't want to really deal with it that much.

My tank is 29 gallon. I got some organic Sphagnum (according to Wikipedia Sphagnum moss = peat moss) moss from my parents, but this is the ornamental kind, which is long and looks like a plant. I read that you don't want the whole sphagnum moss but the ground up brown stuff that has been in the ground. So I'm going to go get some of that. Hopefully it works and doesn't get my water too dark.
