I have been offered as much water as I want from my friends well, pH of 6 but it is pumped up through very old lead pipework.
Any thoughts on the safety of using this supply for my Corydoras?

Get some tests done on the water by your city or municapality.

Clotha, filter it thru carbon in a holding tank. Can you get your hands on a lead tester yourself? After filtering I would test for lead and other trace minerals.

I would bet that the carbon would make the water safe to use. I"m terribly jealous, by the way. My discus would LOVE that water!

I have heard that very old lead pipes have less lead than new copper pipes.   The reasons are, that much of the available lead has already been leached out; sediments and build-up coat the pipes.  

BTW are humans drinking from the well with no ill effects?  Also, many dechlor products claim to neutralize "harmful heavy metals" ?

In the States "Home Depot" has inexpensive lead test kits.

You lot are going to hate me for this.
Well water, pH5.9, Nitrates 0, Nitrites 0, Ammonia 0, No traces of metals, pesticides etc at all, kH 4.
And I will be starting the change over as soon as I can, my fish are going to wonder what has hit them. *celebratesmiley*

Recent studies have shown that older people who have smoked for a very very long time can actually die from system shock when ceasing to smoke. Their body is so used to countering the toxics...

Just hope the same doesn't happen for your fish...., it's so pure, so clean...so balanced....WHERE'S MY POISON!!!
