when u use a wet/dry... the water flows freely to the unit and then is pumped back to the tank... correct?

what happones when the power goes out and the pump can no longer function... wouldnt it be better to pump the water to the filter and then let gravity bring it back to the tank?

I don't know about bioballs being bad. I've always been under the impression that they were excellent for wet/dry filters.

With the sump, you want to make sure that there is enough extra capacity in it to hold any water that will still come out of the tank if the power goes out. You limit the amount of water that the overflows can take in by adjusting the depth of the overflow. Once it drains to a certian point, the syphon will break and no more water will flow into the sump. But like I said, the sump needs to be able to handle this much extra water.

You would prime the overflows after a power outage the same way you set them up in the first place. Most methods I've seen say to take a piece of airline tube and push it to the middle of the 'U' tube to remove the air.

If the power head was left dry I'm sure that eventualy it's just going to overheat and quit working.

yes you are correct on how they work. I've actualy seen a few people with the sump above the tank like you said. It makes the same difference if the sump is above or below the tank. It just depends on how much room you have to work with. One of the nice things about it being below the tank is that it is hidden and you can't see most of the equipment.

well i am kinda lucky because my tank is in the wall... actually in a closet that is kinda offset from the living room... so everything is hidden. i think pumping up and letting the gravity refill the tank is a better way to go... if the power goes out, water will fill the tank and when it comes back on, it will just start again... thanks guys

also, if the power goes out and u are using one of the gravity fed to sump units with the overflow thing and the U pipe, how do u get the water flowing again? what would happen if ur power head was sitting there all day pumping nothing? <<If you have any brains you have a drilled tank. Or you gamble that your overflow will finction correctly. Beware the pipe back from the pump acting as a syphon in this situation>>

also, what is a benifit of it if everyone says bioballs are bad... remember i am fresh water (cichlids) <<Killer for providing a high oxygen enviroment to facilitate the bacterial oxidation to nitrate. Depends on if nitrates are a problem for your setup tho'>>

If you do put the sump above the tank, be sure that there is enough room in the tank to be able to hold the extra water comming down from the sump. If too much water comes down then the tank will overflow. Not a good thing. The only way to really determine the right levels are to test and see.
