I was wondering if anyone had an Idea of what this guy could be. He doesn't quite look like a Yellow Lab. But he has the black strip on the top fin. Sometimes it shows up really dark, and other times you can bearly see it. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks

mine didn't start to change well, not long after i noticed some obvious changes, when i first got it i thought it was a yellow lab, then i noticed its top fin was changing from a black to a more electric blue color, then i guess over a year it went from the first pic to the last. if it is good luck getting any information on it. Can't find anything! and if yours is like mine very camera shy!

duh... hey c-man hows it going? long time no see. Your right the first pic doesn't really look like it, but what gave it away was the dorsal fin, then the second pic just sealed the deal.

Its not a msobo. The head and body shape is all wrong. Going on body shape, its definitely Labidochromis-looking. But its clearly not a pure lab, and the colouring in the second pic strikes me as saulosi-ish.

oh wow, I wasn't expecting all that. Thanks for the "guesses". I'll have to look them up tomorrow while I'm at work. I am posting 2 pics I had when I first got him. I got him out of an assorted tank, baby1 is just him and baby 2 he is next to a yellow lab. They were only maybe a half inch at that time. The guy now changes. The black horizontal strips you noticed get very distinct at times, as does the black strip on the top fin, but other times he looks just yellow with no markings at all. I'll keep an eye on him, and post pictures if he changes color. If he turns into that purple guy that would be really cool! I'll take back everything I said about him being some boring dull yellow fish hehe. Though, he is pretty aggressive.

Thanks

the purple guy would be pretty neat. I took a look at this site
http://www.aqua-art.spb.ru/ryby/m/melanochromis_johannii.jpg
and the black patterns on its body I see on my guy from time to time. So I am thinking you may be right with the johannii mix.

What causes the black patterns to come out more when I just turn the lights on after its been dark for a while, and then they start to fade away?

edit:
ah man... I had a post written on here and the page errored when I saved it :-\ what did I type...

um you guys asked about temperament, I would have to say "cranky". He is pretty aggressive, chases the other guys around a lot. After the plague lifted off my tank, I was left with 7 fish, I guess it was a cross between who was "strong" enough and the "limit" my tank could hold. Who was left:
Striped rafael
snow white albino
bumblebee (crabro)
Acei (last of the first fish I ever bough about 9 months ago)
Big lipped something(http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~emb29/Fish/images/Biglip.jpg)
the yellow mix dude
and another guy I need to get a pic I don't know what he is

The big lip something is a Placidochromis milomo. Very nice fish too. :)

I only ask about temperament cause labs are generally quite peaceful (for mbuna) while most Melanochromis species have a tendency to behave like demon spawn. :D
Matt got it right on with the color/pattern question. Many fish (not just mbuna) look different while the lights are out and sleeping that when they're awake and alert. *thumbsups
