I am starting a 65g tank (36x18x24) and I want some med size aggressive cichlids.  I already have a pair of convicts, and I am thinking of putting in 2 jewl and 1 jack dempsey.  Will this be ok?  What are some other very aggressive med. size cichlids besides these?

Thanks

Re: what are some very aggressive med size cichlid

Convicts are really mean and you could always get more of them. ;) But you probably want some more variety of species huh? Dempseys are fine but kinda ugly in my opinion. Never really had any dealings with the jewels but I know the red devil would make a good aggressive cichlid. You could get a pair of those and they would be plenty aggressive. A male and female would be good in there. But you probably wouldn't want anything else with them. There is one at my lfs that will try to bite you when you walk up to the tank. He is so funny. I wish I could get him but I don't have a tank big enough. :( ;D Good luck with the new tank though. :D ;D

LOL! 'victs are mean little buggars!LOL Jewels are good equally mean. Firemouths are good to. Sure that mix there should be OK.

RedDevils as the name applies are awesome! Truely aggressive fish.LOL! I keep a big male(he's 16"), everytime I walk by the tank he rams the glass. This is one tank I WILL NOT stick my hand in LOL! He killed a 12" pleco, ate a 6" oscar and has destroyed every plastic plant in the tank(they were silicon glued to the glass)LOL!

I would just keep a solo RedDevil, he will fill the 65G and they are very very very aggressive. They make convicts look like kittens.LOL!

My firemouths were never mean they always just hid in the back of the tank.

I think if you want something really really aggressive you should get the red devil. Like I said they are mean, mean, mean. You will love them if your wanting something aggressive.

Another fish you might consider is the green terror. ;D

What tankmate can I put in a 65g with the Red devil?
Do i have room for another cichlid? (one that wont get killed), like a jaguar or something?

Re: what are some very aggressive med size cichlid

Well if the cichlid are small to begin with, you can probably add a few until you get an even larger tank.  ;D
It's really hard to tell which cichlid will become dominant in the tank.  Sometimes it depends on who is the biggest but you never know til you put them in the same tank together who is shred the other apart.  You might have to get ready to return a fish if you experiment.
Ask your LFS if you can return it within 24h if the cichlids don't get along.

Anybody check out the date of the original post? :)

The funky characters you see are the result of a database upgrade gone a little haywire. Mainly it just didn't covert some of the special characters like quote marks and some punctuation. Apparently back in 2002 the site went though a major re-vamp. If you'll notice it also reset all of the join dates to the date of the upgrade, not the real join date for those who were around back then.

convicts and firemouth

This is the exact situation I already have. If you want aggressive, the convicts are little thugs! My firemouth use to run the tank. Then I had to split them (preface: I had no idea what I was doing, I'm new.) one convict with the firemouth, and I was worried about the convict! HA! my firemouth has many a tattered fin and he doesn't strut around the tank anymore. Kinda sad actually:( Why do you want more aggressive? ...for the interesting behavior? Good Luck. I'm still looking for bigger tanks quick, but you are starting with a good fat tank right off. ahhh, tank envy.
