In June my favorite goldfish, Fatso, died. He was a calico Ruykin Goldfish. I'd like to have an idea of what he died of though if anyone can help me.

It looked like he had dropsy only the scales in front where the ones sticking up not the ones in the back. What I've read on dropsy is the scales near the kidneys stick up not the front scales. Anyway I went on vacation and my sister called and told me Fatso was swimming up side down and bleeding  . So I had her end his suffering. Anyway if anyone can enlighten me on that it would be great.

Hmm. I had a goldfish that his kind of happened to.

His scales on one side stuck out.

Were there any other tank-mates that could have picked on him? That, besides internal parasites, is the only thing I can think of off hand...

My Blue Paradise fish did pick on him and my fan-tail at first, but after a few months, a while before Fatso died, Duke (the paradise fish) left them a lone. So I don't think it was Duke's falt. Parasites? Hmmm. Maybe. All his scales in the front stuck out, not just on one side.

Thanks for answering so quick, the info is accepted greatly. Any other suggestions would be great, if there are any.

hmm....could be dropsy too.

that can make the fish bloat up too.

internal parasites again.......or organ disfunction..but by the time their scales stick out, it is usually too late to do anything,

i'm not too sure on that one. I had a few bouts with dropsy, and one fish that got it, he looked like a pinecone...all of his scales were poofed out.

the other one that got it, was fast, and only on one side.

I think it is an osmosis problem, but i may be completley wrong there.

Dropsy is a symptom of internal organ failure, not a disease in itself. So, I would assume it can manifest in several different ways. Unfortunately, once the scales are sticking out, it's usually too late to cure the problem. There are some reports of curing with antibiotics, but chances are slim.
