What did I buy?

I made the mistake of buying these cichlads from the assorted tank. I called my lfs when I realized I was too dumb to ask and no one had a clue. So any help would be appreciated!

Yellow lab type in the center, red zebra type on the right side, not sure about the blue. I say type because its a chance they could be mixed with something.

Those were actually the best. Quick little suckers. I will try again tonight. I thought the yellow was a lab, but the other two I really didn't have a clue. How many more can I add to a 40g or have I already reached capacity?

10-12ish maybe for a 40gal? Ball park number. Mbuna that is, which are basically all thats ever in the mixed africans tank.

Thanks C. I think I am going to get 2 more of each then. Maybe I can end up with a pair(s). If I can ever get a clear pic of them I will post it.

These are not pairing fish, they are harem fish. Keeping pairs will end up with a dead female. You should have 3-4 females for one male.

And numbers depend specifically on the species of mbuna. I'd say as few as 5 to as many as 10-12 depending on what species you're stocking with. Some mbuna would be a definite no in a 40gal tank.

But there is no way to sex them, right? So I wouldn't know how many male-females I have until it's time to spawn.

If you can't vent them or sex them visually, you'd need to buy a group and pull out extra males as you determine them.
