I have a 55 gallon tank with 10 head tail light tetras, 1 angel, 3 discus. 35% water changes every other day, pH 7.0, temp 87, nitrates 0, ammonia 0. Feed frozen bw, frozen bs, tetra color bits 4 times a day.

The tank has been running for 5 months. I've had the tetras for 4 months and have had no problems with them until recently. Lately I've been noticing little white spots on my tetras that look like ich but arent ich. I bumped the temp up to 87 and am using salt. I've been doing this for little more then a week. The little white spots are mostly on the tetras tails and will not go away.
The last fish I added was a discus two weeks ago.

The tetras are starting to get red streaks on them now which I think is a secondary bacterial infection from the white spots.

One of the tetras started floating around so i took him out and he had no white spots, just red all over his belly. Heres a pic of him.
What should I do?

if that temp is 87 farenheit then its too high. thats like 35 celcius. but fish can believe it or not ... live in that temp sooo... arent discus species fish... like their own only? and i cant explain the white spots. maybe theyere some kind of skin fluke. are they big? are they longer than wide? how much do you feed the fish?

p.s. 35% every other day seems a bit much. the water needs to settle and the fish need to get used to it. changes of around 25% every 1/2 weeks is good.

p.s.(2) why did u take the fish out of the water. its best to put in quarentine as this keeps them seperate. instead of dieing in front of tankmates and of course decomposing or spreading even more.

Discus need daily water changes and feeding 4 times a day to avoid being stunted. I think the tetras probably died from overfeeding or high temp. who knows.
My angelfish is fine, so are all the discus. My tetras are basically being wiped out, theres only 5 left.

Maybe ill try a school of cardinals, I heard they do are tolerant of high temps and are found in discus original habitat.

Dan, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't give advice.

My guesses: Red streaks in the tetras could be from oxygen deprivation. When you raise the temps up that high, the water will hold less oxygen, so you really need to up the water oxygenation. You can do that by adding an air pump and sponge filter for extra circulation and gas exchange. Yes, the discus do need regular water changes and feedings, so no problems there. Do only the tetras have the white spots on them? Could be that the tetras are stressed out from the high temps and multiple water changes.

For ich, you only need to have the temps up around 82 to kill it, 87 is a bit too high for the tetras.

Hey guys I'm going to close this thread. Obviously the name change that Lotus tried didn't make them stop so if you want to continue the conversation please feel free to open up a new thread. Sorry!
