justin,

it's short for "plecostomus". you know, the sucker catfish that you see stuck to the sides of people's aquariums. sometimes incorrectly called "algae eaters". they eat algae, but are not a true "algae eater" species.

pleco, pleco, pleco! Okay three dead. No worries, I've got tons left. j/k of course!

It depends on the species, not the size of the tank. I have a sh*tload of bristlenose plecos. They are only supposed to get 5 inches long. I have a breeding pair and an extra male in a 55 gallon. They are about 3 years old and about 4 inches long now. I'm going to get a 38 gallon tank soon for another breeding pair hopefully. I've got 20+ tiny wigglers in a 5 1/2 gal (moving to 10 gal next weekend) right now. :)

I dont like when people say Pl*co.

I have been saying pleco for like 4 months, and mine is still alive (what does it matter though) it is 13 years old though.

My goodness... does it hurt you if I say pl*co? At all?

Do you think anyone really believes the silly superstition?

I've been frequenting online fishkeeping communities for 5 years now, and it's simply a habit. Look at the placement of the keys on your keyboard (assuming you use a standard US QWERTY), the characters: P, L, *, O are right next to each other, the C is way over on the other side, and the E is two rows bove that. I can type "pl*co" much faster than I can type "pleco"

I find it hilarious how much energy you guys spend over "hating" it when people type "pl*co".

Yup, pleco means plecosthemus (spelling?). If you ever treat your tank for ick, make sure you take out any plecos you may have. They'll die if you leave them in during treatment... learned that the hard way :-(
