what is this white substance?

There is a stringy foggy white substance growing on everything in my tank. i was just curious to what it was and if it is harmful to my fish

Sonds like some type of algae dont know though. A pic would help also.

I have never heard of white algae but then i don't propose to know everything. My guess would be bacterial or fungal infection. Some more information would be helpful. What kind of tank, how big, water parameters etc.

Well, if the stuff is also growing on non-organic material, like gravel and plastic stuff, I highly doubt it's fungus.

Oh I don't know.Dry Rot in building grows on virtually anything and thats a fungus.

Is there perhaps uneaten food in your tank that is rotting? It sounds like some kind of fungus to me. It's unlikely it's harmful to your fish, and some extra tank vacuuming should help get rid of it.
