i use black but sometimes you can find one that has rocks all over and i think those are cool too.you can stick some cork board on the back of your tank or you could get one of the scene background with plans or cactus or some other cheesy design depending on what you like

A little off the subject...but fishrmylife, how do your black neons get along with the danios? I was thinking about getting some for my 15 when it finishes cycling...I hear they are a bit more aggressive than neons so they seem like they might be a good match with them...but I was just curious.

I don't have any backgrounds on any of my tanks yet...I think I found one at my lfs that is all plants mostly that I think I am going to get for my 10 G and I can't decide for the life of me what to put on the back of the 15 Hex.

my black neons arent aggresive at all, they are very active, they like to school with my cardinals sometimes, the danios are the ones who seem a little aggressive, they chase eachother around, and sometimes my cardinals, but they don't mess with my black neons for some reason. My tank is still growing, I really need some plants for the fish, I only have two live ones in there right now, but the fish seem to have fun, they love my new Emperor 400, since it puts out a nice current, I have the filter all the way to one side of the tank, so the other side is halfway calm so they can rest or whatnot, I'll put a pic up a little later.

I use black posterboard, mostly cuz it looks decent and is cheap. I've seen examples though of people using styrofoam and forming rock formations in it with a flat back and epoxying it to the inside of their tank as a background, didn't look too difficult, and looked amazing. I'd like to try that someday.

my 55 has a dark blue background, which i like because a printed one that big wouldnt look good with my tank. in one of my 10's I use a printed one that has brown and green leaves and it matches the tank extremellllly well. It blends right in with the plants I have and helps add to the whole look of the tank. Plus, i just think it looks cool with the river rocks. the other 10 has a printed background that also goes well with the deep river rock I used.

ha ha ha, nice 420loach. Im using plain old black ones for 3 of my tanks and a blue reflective one on the other and my betta is aways flaring at it. I wonder if this is healthy or not?

After reading a previous post on this subject I stole my daughter's black construction paper and taped it to the back of my 29 gallon tank.

To my suprise it looks pretty good!. I will still get a commercial background but until then it looks pretty good.

right now i only have 1 aquarium up and running and it has those cheesy plants and swords n' platties in it. typical background imagery.

i prefer the plain blue ones, to tell you the truth. it helps give the aquarium more of a "clean lines" type look.

I've a 35 gallon coldwater tank with no background, cos it's lit from behind by the striplight under the wall mounted cupboards above it. It's not planted so it doesn't need daylight bulbs - the wall's painted a light mauve and the goldfish look great against it.

On my planted 10 gallon, I have a black fading to dark blue against which the plants and minnows look OK.

The 55 gal Tanganyika community tank has those Hagen structured backgrounds, with black sand and slate rockwork and vallisneria rising from the left and floating right across the water surface. Very pleased with that effect.

The 35 gallon brichardi and multi tank has one of those printed riverbed backgrounds, with river rocks and crypto. balansae. Usually I am not a fan of these printed backgrounds but as I've used mainly granite cobbles to create the rockwork it blends in well and gives almost credible depth.

Picking up my 5th tank soon, a 20 gallon for shell-dwellers, thinking about using a couple of roofing slates, a decent stone effect that takes up no space - anyone tried slates yet?

cheesy blue and plants background stuff. Looking for a cool poster or home depot has some decorative window tints that I am going to look at.

Froggy, re: danios and neons.... I have giant danios and black neons. Neons seem intimidated by the larger, faster fish and some day soon I am going to remove the danios. Just wanted to share that info. Don't know about zebra danios or others.

I used cork tiles and spray painted them with a metalic blue auto paint. Glued them to the outside frame of the tank with silicone. Looks pretty good. I used an irregular spray pattern, and the metalic paint reflects the light a little. You could use any color. The cork grain makes the whole thing pretty interesting without dominating the tank.
