I got him from a lfs a couple of months ago & I was led to believe that he was a white spotted plec but when I looked here thanks to planetcatfish.com he doesn't look like that at all.

sorry to but in on your post but I have a question about my Pl*co also. My pl*co has about FIVE different skin types. They are very different from the next.

1. Black with spots--like the pic above
2. White with spots
3. Black with orange stripes (what?????)
4. Red with spots
5. Red with stripes

My water is good and my tank is established. I feed him good every night (algae wafers) and he has plenty of room. I'm sure these different looks are MOOD related. I want him to be happy so what is his happy color? Also, when I bought him I was told It was a common Pl*co. Could it be another kind?

Have a look at Planet Catfish at L-001, go to the cat-e-log and sort on common names inc. L-numbers. Go down to family Loricariidae. That's what it most looks like to me, and I think I saw something for sale like this last Saturday labelled as L-001.
Gold nuggets are black with white or cream or yellow small to medium spots with matching fin edges. This look brown with gold short stripes/flashes.

Uncut bulldog - what colour is he when he'sfeeding, moving around , fins erect - look at these and work out when he's happy or irritated or scared, then match those to colours
