I am currently setting up my tank again .. after a terrible ick accident and a non fish educated mother looking after them for a few days...

When I finally get everything back to normal with my tanks water, what fish should I put in it?

I have a only a 10gallon fresh water tank..

any suggestions?

Hmm. well, if it was me, I'd go to the LFS and see if they can order you 2 figure 8 puffers, and while your waiting, plant the tank. You'd have 2 happy fish, it would be a pretty tank, and enjoyable. maybe throw in some otos for clean up crew...

Very small fish, and probably not more than six of them. I just discovered how pretty bloodfin tetras are. I would definately get a lot of natural looking green stuff in that tank, some neutral gravel, then do six or eight bloodfin tetras. They might not look like much in the store, but when you get them home, you realize exactly why they're called bloodfin.

Ditto what JWright said... And a school of small tetras with a few corys for the bottom would make a great 10 gallon...

Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions.. I'll go over them, and then when I finally get some new filter carterages (stupid fish store was out of them!) and then actually begin my fishless cycle once again.. I will tell you when I add some fish..

can someone give me some info on plants?

What do you need to know?

I've got a 10 gallon tank with 3 cheapy aponogenton bulbs from wal-mart with a 15 watt bulb. Don't laugh. If you saw the leaf size, it would blow you away! They take up the entire tank. One bulb has 24 stems shooting out of it. Leaf width is about 3", length 8-12". No fertilizer, no chemicals, nothing. Just 2 blue gouramis (breeders), 1 female platy, and a ton of fry. This is the cheap route...
