In a 10-gal quarintine tank I would only suggest at most two sponge filters or you will throw the fish around. They should be enough because you won't be buying lots of fish at once.

AC150 :)

Some might say thats to much but i use it fine with my 10gal planted. I also use a penguin170 on another 10gal of mine. You dont need this much filtration but it never hurts to over do it a little

lol, AC150...

thats okay too, but i got a ACmini on my tank and its perfect.

no probs with a bigger filter on ten gallon if you take precautions (like a prefilter) to make sure that small or weak fish dont get sucked up. but some fish may be to weak to swim around against the current.

oh, ive never had emperor filters so i wouldnt know... i really like ACs.

actually "ideal" flow rate is not really accurate, and most people say 7-10X per hour. For a quarantine, i also second AC Minis, cuz their media compartment is very versatile. Here ill explain....

Ok ur quaratining, and by chance u have a sick fish, easily take out the carbon, add another sponge in its place and treat ur fish accordingly. Once treated place carbon back in and filter out meds.

Most other filter catridges have the carbon incorporated in the middle of two layers of floss and its just annoying to take it apart and redo it. Plus aquaclear sponges pretty much never need replacing :)

i got a whisper (smallest one in walmart, it said for 10-15 gallon tanks. works alright for my 10 gal puffer tank), although mine freezes up some times, i recently read that using sand as substrate can sometimes clog your filters up if it gets into the working parts, i need to take them out and clean them, but im a little worried about bacteria loss.

I have a Millenium 1000 on my 10g and it does an awesome job. It's only rated to a 15g so it's not that much more filtration. Very quiet too. When it was the only tank in my room it was dead silent in the middle of the night. You have to be about this [ ] far away just to hear it.

Thanks a lot for all your input! I am only getting the filter etc, to use as a quarantine and hospital tank. So I will only use it for short periods at a time... Better to have a proper set up than dying fish or in trouble in my main tanks, with nowhere to treat them!

I am picking up my 2 or 3 extra fancy Goldfish on Thursday and will house them for a month in the 10 gallon set up, before trasferring them to their permanent home in the 38 gallon.

As I said earlier, I'd rather have excess filtration and air stones, and do daily water changes, than have a sick fish in my main tank.. I don't want to lose anymore if I can help it..

For the cost, go for the AquaClear Mini on a 10 gal. Its cheap and does a good job for the size, plus it has seperate filter/carbon. You might also use the 10gal as a quarantine tank right? so you will need some bio-filtration too. The sponge in the AC Mini can be easily removed (unlike bio-wheels) and placed in your big tank when you need to treat with meds that would otherwise destroy the bacteria colony.

Congrats on the new goldfish, I lost 1 (Midas) a few days ago and have a new baby yesterday. Hope thats it for my fish loss for a while.
