Hi,

I have just bought a 2nd hand tank; it's 3 feet long, 2 feet high, and 1 foot wide. Just wondering how many gallons this tank was. It's for 4 goldfish, between 2 and 3 inches long, in a much smaller tank at present.

thanks for any info !

the formula is lenght X width X height, then take that answer and divide by 231, and that gives you the amount of US gallons that it holds. Based on this and your measurements, it holds exaclty 44.8 gallons which is roughly a 45 tall. I also have one of these tanks *thumbsupsmiley* they're probably the most perfect angle tank ever, but i'm putting african cichlids in mine.

Or you just get a computer-in-your-pocket calculator to do the conversions for you *pats TI-85*.

It's a 45 gallon tall. I have one in the store set up as a salt water kit, and I remember that it takes a 36" long hood. I like them because they have nice wide viewing space but I don't like them because they don't have any width to them.  Seems like a whole lot of tanks are like that. If you want nice wide viewing, you get taller narrow tanks that are hard to decorate in. At least, I find it hard to decorate, I don't like a whole lot of empty tank up top.

But if you want width and surface area to turn around in, you get this squat little viewing space. Compare a twenty gallon tall to a twenty gallon long and you'll see what I mean.

Have fun with your tank.

I usually take a one gallon jar and fill it with water and dump it into the tank.  If you need to do this 45 times, it's most likely a 45 gallon tank.

colesea LOL - TS-85 - wasn't that thing nicknamed the Trash 80 ?

another cool thing you can use the LxWxH/231 formulae for is to calculate the approximate gallons of water in your tank, after you subtract glass thickness, the average gravel thickness and account for any large rocks.

for example a 65 gallon african tank might only contain about 50 gallons worth of water which is good to remember when/if you are dosing medications.
