I was just staring at my Betta when I noticed to my great surprise that i have some snails! Must be the new Java fern...so much for soaking it in potassium permanganate then :-(
Anyway....I can't identifty them.
They're about 6 mm and a sort of short fat cone shape going to a little point. They're a sort of pale gold/beige colour with opaque yellowish spots around the widest bit of the shell going to darker non spotty mid brown at the point. I can't see much of the body but they seem to have long whispy antenae (?) bits comming out.
Does anyone know what they are? Are they good or bad and are they going to take over my tank?
Thanks!

BTW. It's not a Malaysian Trumpet snail....I've been looking at pictures. Although it goes to a small point it's not nearly that long or dark.

the snails you re dealing with are the worst .not that u cant eliminate them but they do no good work in the tank so i d try to eliminate them.

If the problem is small u can try to remove the snails manually for now if they start getting out of hand i would try getting some type of fish from the botia species which are very good at riding tanks of snails.

u have a smal tank so i d suggest the kuhli loach and because it is not so difficult to find betta new homes (because they do not need so much space) if u think that you d have trouble mixing the two.you can easily makea new temporary home.
although i dont think this will be necessary coc these loaches are very dossile.

Sink a small bottle with a piece of shrimp in it onto the gravel bed. Overnight the snails will find their way into it. Then remove the bottle and do as you please. You made need to repeat this several times for it to be the "final snail in the coffin" ;) It works well.

malaysian trumpets are royal pains in the rear. i've tried the bottle trick and the loach thing. The shrimp-in-a-bottle didn't work and the loach has a hard time getting them since they're so small.

The thing is scrumpy, that they are actually helping your tank. they'll eat waste in the substrate and add nutrients. you'll mostly see them there.

the downside: they're an annoyance as they breed like crazy and get everywhere. they also like to occasionally munch on a plant.

i would just leave 'em in there and smash the one that crawl up the glass. don't overfeed, it'll just help them multiply.

the only true proven way to get rid of them is too tear down the tank :( but I even tried it once and they still somehow surivied.

Thanks for your replies :)
TBH I've been looking at a lot of pictures and I'm pretty sure they're not MTS but whatever they are I've been spotting more.
I'll try all suggestions to reduce their numbers and accept that I'm not likely to get rid of them altogether. The one thing I don't want to do is add more fish...it's only a 20l and I wan't my male bett to have lots o room. The pigmy cories are to clean up and keep him company without antagonising him :)
Actually I haven't had to clean to glass for ages and had been patting myself on the back for keeping nitrates down. Perhaps I should pat the snails on the back!
Thanks everyone...I'm going to be tough about controlling the population but let a couple carry on cleaning up.
I haven't got a decent camera but I might try and stick a snail on the scanner bed later so you can look at it :)
