My Red-Finned Trewavas got into a bad fight with my Male Kenyi who is the dominate in my tank, needless to say he lost:( . I was wondering what i should do to help my Trewavas?

Here are some pictures of him right now:

I am i doing the right thing by seperating him? I mean he is in a small breeding/quarintine net because i don't have the option of making a quarintine tank.

-Please help, thanks

Honey, it's not a trewavasae. They have "noses". What you have is what COULD be a very nice male Metriaclima greshakei if you don't force him to live with a kenyi male :p

Put him in a 10gal medical tank and use some salt and melafix on him, he should be fine. I know you said you don't have one, but spend the $20 and get a 10gal, you should always have a medical tank on hand for times like this. He can't stay in that net for long, and you can't medicate him in there without medicating the entire tank.

how do you set up a medical tank, do i have to have a filter, heater, and everything else, because that will still be pretty expensive? I would really like to keep him, but my male kenyi has been with me since i started cichlids, so this is tough, what would you recommend?

Without the greshakei in the tank as his target, the kenyi will only move on to the next victim...so I recommend getting rid of him.

Yes, a medical tank needs a filter and a heater...don't have to worry about the trivial stuff like gravel or plants or decor. You should be able to get a 10gal tank for like $15, and a small AC filter for like $20-25. Personally, I do anything I possibly can to save a fish when there is something wrong with it, because they are in my care and my responsibility and to let him perish from something what is very easily cured would be such a waste. It's up to you, but why let him die for no reason? It's not like you'll never use the tank again...as I said, you should always have a medical tank ready for when you need it.

You could go pick up a 'starter 10G' kit for fairly cheap which should come with all the basics (you don't need gravel in a hospital tank or anything). You can use it for quarintine when you get new fish as well. Aquarium Salt is dirt cheap ($2.00 a box) and Malafix is about $5.00.

A heater isn't expensive for a 10G, you can pick a decent one up for about $15.00. Just make sure you have a thermometer in there to monitor the water temp and keep a very close eye on it.
