I just got a 10 gallon tank a few days ago. Some fish have died. I now have only a male swordtail and a dwarf african frog. What should I put in it? I would like to get more swordtails and frogs. I would also like ghost shrimp, catfish, or anything you can think of.

Did you cycle the tank yet?
Once you have done that you can put a variety of fish in there, dwarf gourami, corys, danios, guppys, mollies, tetras, and more. Pick and mix =) Remember to cycle so you dont lose any more fish.

I'm probably not the best at explaining this, but ... its all about the nitrogen cycle. Fish give out waste products, which turn in to ammonia, amonia is toxic to fish. There needs to be a build up of useful bacteria to turn the amonia in to nitrate or nitrite. To cycle you can either use fish (hardy ones like danios) or fishless cycle, if you want to go that way you can read the first thread in the beginners section.
Good luck =)

The article in that fishless cycling thread is very informative...if you want to go that direction.

I'm not sure how frogs do with the cycling process...but your swordtail should be fine through the cycle. I would probably get one or two more if you decide to do a fish-in cycle.

Sounds like you should do some more research...if you're having any problems finding information this is a good place to ask it. Welcome to the board :)

For now you might get one more sword tail then let the tank cycle through the ammonia, nitrite cycle.

Putting anymore fish in would be very stressfull to the fish as the cycle stage builds up in the tank.

ammonia and nitrite are toxic to fish and at high lvls can kill them.

It will take 4-8 weeks to have your tank cycle. during that time do light feeding and monitor the levels of these toxins by testing the water or getting it tested at your Fish Store.

After your tank has cycled add a few fish every couple of weeks.

A Properly cycled and maintained ten gallon tank can hold about 20-25 inches of tropical fish.

Look closely at the fish you do like and research them for water conditions, tempature, and which fish are compatible with them. during your cycle time is the best time to plan this out :)
