Plecos are hit and miss with algae consumption.... Some bushies tear it up while others eat mainly prepared foods etc...

If you have an algae issue I would go otto if you can house them given your overall tank.

If you are looking for a really nice looking fish in that size range i would go blue or green phantom... Gold nuggets are also super pretty and really slow growers but they are going to max out at about twice that size eventually (years from now)

you could also look into a fleet of smaller plecos, like the leapord frogs, snowballs, colombian zebras, flyers etc.

Bushy/bristle nose are the easiest to find tho. They are nice fish, tend to be more adventurous and will give you the highest chance of algae eating...

yeah I have been seeing them too!!! I found a starry night at a little mom and pop shop that generally doesn't have much in the way of plecos... He was cheap too :)

Of course my overall advice is pony up the cash and buy something really cool. But to get into a super fancy pleco you are taking 40-70 dollars... You probably weren't thinking along those lines. :) If you were PM me and I will give you some ideas :)
