I always go to pet stores like Petsmart and Petco and look at their assorted cichild tanks. I love buying cichlids I find in there for like 4 dollars when other fish stores charge like 20 dollars for the same fish. Just wondering if anyone else does this and what your guys' best finds have been. Mine's probably an Electric Blue for about 5 bucks.

I found my Deep Water Haps for about $6 each. A great find IMO, being one of my favorite Haps. I always take a peak into ever cichlid tank, you never know what the wholesaler could have mistaked as something else! And the fishstore doesn't catch.

And of course my recent shelldwellers that i found in an LFS were a great find, although not really a "steal" price. But these were not in the mixed african tank.

My local lfs actually imports a lot of stuff straight from Peru and Bolivia so I regularly get to look for contaminants. I get them for 5 bucks a time... best so far are Burjurquina sp, and a Crenicichla lepidoptera.
Also they get lots of 'odd' cories mixed in with what they ordered. Most boxes of cories have 5 - 10 % oddities, some are approx a 60/40% mix when there are 2 similar species cohabiting in the same place

Where I live on Norfolk Island we swap out Cichlids as they breed, I am so jelous of the bargins everyone else gets! To bring Cichlids into Norfolk Island it costs no less than $30 each. However on the upside of living on this Island we have a whole Dam (only tiny as what you will all be used too) full of Swordtails and Guppies, the guppies are the best food for our Cichlids and becuase we have a never ending supply of Swordtails we feed all the dull coloured ones we catch to our Cichlids for a bit of fun aswell.

my best find would have to be the two severums i've got now. someone had dumped them at my lfs, and the owner was way over stocked so he gave them to me. grant it they were snow white and undefed but in my care i think they've turned out alright.

I baught most of my mbuna for $1.50. I guess that's how I started out with them, no need for deep pockets there haha.
Great finds that I've passed up have been $2 P. electra and a $2 Nanochromis transvestitus. Thinking back now I REALLY should have baught that Nanochromis but didn't cause I like to buy pairs...
I also scored on a bunch of baby Albino Eureka red peacocks, P. demasoni, and O. tetrastigma when a breeder was having a moving sale. No individual fish cost me more than $2.
My greatest find has to be S. jurupari though. Out of nowhere my boyfriend and I get the urge for some jurupari, know we're NEVER gonna find any around here and after visiting the one shop with the most random things we happen across a tank of baby Satanoperca mislabelled as "Clown Ruby Cichlids". It was so crazy, we took all of them.

my best find as of yesterday on ebay is a 1 meter (3 foot ish) tropical aquarium by Fluval (hagen) for £16 ($29), apparently its only 12 months old, used for 6 months and i've looked on the web and the retail price of them is over £200 ($360).
I'm going to collect it next weekend so fingers crossed i havent bought a dud, and that it's all in good working order. will let you know
