I am just starting a mbuna community tank and wanted to know when the best time would be to add one or two Synodontis njassae to the mix. Right now there are no fish in the tank (doing a fishless cycle for a whlie). Would it be better to put them in the tank in the beginning by themselves, with the mbunas, or after some mbunas are already established?

Thanks!!

In my experience, Mbuna are no respecters of anyone's territory - they get their noses in everywhere and simply make a fast exit if required. I had to get rid of mine because they were fin nipping the (six inch) Pl*cs when they came out to feed - hope your Syno fares better - but keep an eye on it.

I think this is an excellent question and my advice would be to add the synos first, let them get a toe hold for a day at least before adding the mbuna. As Purple and Cichlidian say, trying to wrestle territory off the mbuna once established is a losing game.
