I just got Pet Warehouse catalogue today.  They now have malaysian dritwood.  8"- 16" for $9.99.  I've gotten it a wee bit cheaper at lfs but it is hard to find and not always in stock.   I've seen it @ PETCO.  Or find some at yer local lake, like pook sez.   BTW I dont like the desert stuff that most stores sell.  Even though they are bolted to slate, they float and eventually get REAL soft.  Whatever!?

Aspguru just grab a mask and snorkel, walk down to your river or lake, jump in, grab some wood and your in business..  if you have to take a small saw with you to cut them off.

This may sound like a stupid question but can't you just make your own driftwood?
I mean any piece of wood you find in a lake was at one time living, so why cant you just cut any piece of wood you want, and then make it driftwood for your tank.  Scrub it nice and pretty, boil it for a while and soak in a bucket for a few weeks/months until it has leached out most of its tannins/toxins, and then introduce into your aquarium.  I suppose this would be the cheapest route to go.  Is there some fundamental reason as to why this is not safe for your fish?

diftwood is best picked off a beach so that the wood has been sitting in the sun bleaching it out, not any peice of wood will do.  it has to be dried! and Dead!! you can just cut of a limb of a tree and expect it not to kill of everything in your tank!  Somonas is right, you can get it under water, just make sure you clean it well, and bleach it out, leave it out in the sun for a few weeks, then boil it and pop it in the tank..
