Well, not the best first post for this forum but here goes.
My tank was hit last week and the last of my fish have passed away today......... *ALL* Lost almost 50 fish over the past fortnight.

I suspect my tank was hit with Septicemia (possible secondary) on one of my loaches......

Well, the tank was hit last week and the last of my fish have passed away today......... sick.gif

I did post this originally in my earlier post but as that was a long post, I thought I would ask the direct question.

I suspect my tank was hit with Septicemia (possible secondary) on one of my loaches......

In the past week I have already done 2 80% water changes, numerous 25% changes, cleaned my tank and rinsed plants, 2 courses of Tetracycline, a course of Pimafix and Allcure.............not sure where to go from here.

Do I now simply go through the fishless cycle process again? Would all bacteria be dead? Go through another Tetracycline course?

Please, any help here would be good...............

My tank was just under 3 years......270 litres........fully cycled........

Do I turn off the heater so that the water gets cold so bacteria would die and then begin a fishless cycle again?

So many questions..........and family so upset..........feel like giving up.........5 year old daughter very distressed and my 10 year old son upset with me!!

thanks

Can't offer advice on Septicemia but it seems like you know what do about that.

As far as turning off the heater though, I wouldn't do that. It's good for the bacteria.

I'd try my best to keep the bacteria alive by adding ammonia in the suggested parts on the bottle. (to keep them alive and fed)

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't want to re-start the cycling process.

Sorry to hear about your losses. Thats devastating to say the least. My heart goes out to you and your children.

Ok Just read about Septicemia a bit and I have a good grasp of what it is.
I recommend raising the temp to 84-85 degrees (if there are no fish) in an attempt to kill this deadly infection. You've already treated with antibiotics which may help to kill it. Run at this temp for a week or so while trying to keep the good bacteria alive.
This infection may have been introduced by live foods or bacteria-infected foods so toss those to prevent this from happening in the future.

If I'm wrong in my post, I hope someone like Lotus can offer some better advice.

I have always heard that raising the temp will speed up the life cycle of any organism/ bacteria that cause infection (causing it to die off before it repoduces), where lowering the temp prolongs the life. So if you have no fish in the tank then getting the temp up would definitly help.

What I have done, and is based on feedback from several others and another forum is is as follows...........(your feedback would be very welcome)..

Take out Noodles and Sponges from canister filters..........reconnect canister to tank and put in 1 litre of Ammonia and let it run through for 24 hours.............tank is 270 litres.
Empty tank with Vac..............refill with water use ............empty tank again.........
Fill with water at twice depth of gravel and use Ammonia again............let sit for 24 hours............do Gravel vac again..........

Fill with water, empty again...............fill again with water and empty again...........

Let it sit for couple days, on day 2, empty water and good gravel vac and refill to top adding in Prime........
Add Seachem Cycle and complete fishless cycle..............

So I have a lot of work to do...........this sure was a total wipeout........
