where to get live rock

i'm researching sw tanks and the topic of live rock came up on the internet and books....i was wondering what it is, if i need it, where i can get it, and how much it costs....and do power heads need an air pump?

LR is basically rock which has organisms and bacteria from the ocean living in/on it. any lfs which does SW stuff should carry live rock. You do need it (roughly 1 pound per gal), and it is expensive ($5-10 a pound)...power heads do not need an air pump

If you plan to buy at least over 30 lbs of rock , you should consider buying it online. There are numerous places that sell live rocks that are way below LFS prices but they do cost in terms of shipping.

Try to see if there is a local reef club in your area also. They will help you out.
