I finally decided on what I'm getting. I'm going to be picking up a 46g bowfront tank in a couple weeks. I'm ordering all the 'stuff' for it ahead of time, because I will be sad if I bring home the tank, and can't start putting it together because I'm waiting for shipments to come in. Anyway, things I'm putting in it are:
(freshwater setup, limited live plants, tropical community - rainbows mainly)
Rena 300 Air pump
3x Rena 4" micro bubblers
2x Rena 100w top-light submersible heaters
Standard 36" flourescent lighting, with sylvania gro-lux bulbs
2x Magnum HOT 250 Canister filters
My question is this. I'm bidding on a Biowheel 60 pro to hook up the Magnums to. I'll configure it so each Magnum discharges to a biowheel (the 60 is really a dual 30). If I lose the one I'm bidding on (which I probably will since the seller put up "I reserve the right to cancel at anytime" last night ), I'll just buy new. WHICH CREATES THE CONFLICT: The Biowheel 60 pro (unpowered) is only $11 cheaper than an Emporer 400. When I add in the fittings and adapters to hook it up to the Magnums, it's about the same price.
SO, what would you guys do? I know the Emperor 400 obviously has its advantages, being self powered, but then I have to buy filters for it. Also, the Emperor 400 is rated at 400gph - in addition to the 2x 250gph the Magnums have, that's 900gph on a 46 g tank! (which will filter the tank 19.5x per hour). I already have the 2 HOT Magnums. Should I get the Biowheel Pro 60 to use with them, or the Emporer 400? Should I not use the Magnums if I get the emporer?
Help.
