Would fish be happier in?

- 29 TANK (30x12x18'')
- 30 BREEDER (36x18x12'')
*Sizes are in LXWXH

Basically the tank will be going under a staircase. The slope of the staircase limits my options to these 2 tanks or something smaller obviously.

I like the long tanks but I'd like to keep my fish happy.

Barring keeping angelfish, the 30breeder will give you more surface area and hence can carry a bigger bioload. Of course my bias runs to long tanks for a number of reasons, but primarily because of the increase in surface area.

Snoce pretty much summed it up, and with your 2nd choice (30 gallon tank: 36" x 18" x 12") you have a much larger footprint of 648 in^2 as opposed to only 360 in^2 for the 29 gallon. Fish often like to "stake out" territory, and having almost twice as much real estate makes for happier fish, or more fish. Either way it's better.
