u guys heard about this power head filter? the thing is im using the regular whisper 10 w/ the bio bag as the cartridge. and this bio bag is mainly for mechanical and chemical filtration as far as i know... biological is kinda weak in this case... then i've found some new whisper filters in petco last week with a note saying "new with biological filtration"... and when i look at the back i saw this thing black sponge called bio-foam which is used essentially for biological filtration...

im thinkin of buyin the bio-foam so that i can put it on my regular whisper 10... do u think it is worth it? does it really help?

It will work as long as you don't clean it in tap-water or anything. Bacteria will set-up shop on the pad. I wouldn't buy the whole new filter just use the pad and set it up where it is the last thing the water touches before it returns to the water.

My whisper 10 has the bio foam insert. It's really just a peice of foam on a plastic grid that slides in front of the bio bag. You could just buy some foam (I think Fluval 104 foam is the perfect size LxW wise) and just cut it in half (thickness wise), stick it in your whisper in between the bio bag and where the water gets dumped back into your tank and voila. I really don't see how or why that would be any different, in fact I know it works since I do this myself on my other 10 gallon (which uses a knock-off filter that holds the whisper bio bags perfectly).

wonderboy, yeah i tried fitting that fluval foam while i was on a pet store... but when i read that fluval foam i think it says its more used for mechanical filtration, although size wise it will fit. what about the plastic grid, is it necessary?

one more thing, i found this filter media for whisper that has the three way filtration system already... instead of using the regular bio bag, can i use this one? http://petsolutions.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_79277204_A_Imagine+Filter+Cartridges_E_ do u think this will be effective?

Chrysler, the fluval foam is EXACTLY the same stuff you'll find in Aqua Clear filters - which have excellent biological filtertration. I read that on the box too and was a little confused, the foam won't be doing any mechanical filtering in your whisper since it's placed after the bag. The plastic grid is just what holds the foam in place, same concept as the plastic thing that holds the bio bag. I'd say just go with the fluval foam, it's not worth buying a whole new filter and will be every bit as good and it just so happens to be the perfect size.
