I have a jet black balloon bellied mollie and she has a big white patch of scales like a sore. What could cause this? She is swimming like crazy (thats normal she is very active) and she is still eating but her hurt side has been pulling her down so she is kind of swimming sideways and is trying to correct it. Is there anything I can do to help her or is it completely hopeless?

it's been a while but hope it helps. i think i had this problem recently. my female sword and one of my white clouds got infected by this thing. they had white stuff all over their body and they became very lethargic. and it seemed that the white stuff was eating away flesh and tail regions. i quickly transferred them to a seperate tank, added cold water, and a good amount of salt. after releasing them both in the tank, the sword got rid of the white patches pretty quickly and started swimming around. white cloud was doing worse, it was actully bleeding. i changed the water daily, and the sword was fine and dandy in one day. swimming around and w/o any sign of the patch, her tail was partially eaten off though. i transfereed her back in the regular tank, and she is doing fine now, even her tail healed up. i kept the white cloud there for a few more days and it healed as well, though still has scars and is a bit shy now. you can see visible scars on it's body but she swims around regularly now and eats well.
both fish are doing okay.

The general answer is going to be add salt and raise the temp.

I am having the same problem with my black mollie. I am not sure if it is ick or something else.

I added the salt last night and raised the temp to 78 (could go a bit higher but I have a hillstream loach and they like cold water) and as of this morning the white that she has on her eyes and mouth seem to be less. I can now see the pinkish flesh where this "white thing" has eaten some of her lip.

I don't know how much salt your 1 pleco can handle maybe someone else will post and let you know.

My black mollie also has white stuff on it's scales *SICK* At first I thought it was ick so I bought some Mardel Maracide and have been using it for over a week. I'm starting to think it's not ick because A.) it's not going away at all B.) The white stuff isn't so much little spots but rather white streaks on the edges of the scales. I'm starting to this it's a fungus and will start to treat for that. All of the other fish in my tank are problem free.

How's everyone progress with their sick mollies coming along?
