I have a 5gallon Regent with BioWheel, Marineland heater & bubblewand. My tank is 3weeks old & i have fancytail guppies & a chinese alge eater in my tank. I've had ich 3 times & just had it pop up again yesterday & have removed the main fish that i can see has it. I have white specs in my water, i really see them as the water comes out of the biowheel. Are these white specs ich spores? planaria worms? My water looks clear. The only other problem i can see is that bubbles from my bubblewand are producing foam/bubbles on top of water but my lfs said since i still am cycling the tank not to add or change anything to remove the foam/bubbles. I put quik-cure in yesterday after seeing the ich but thats it. I'm new to aquariums & can use any help, seems like everyone is telling me to do something different & all i want to do is make my tank safe for my fish.

Ich usually takes at least a week to cure, and you have to treat the whole tank. Taking fish out won't really help you, as they may be carrying the ich, but you can't see it yet. You should keep medicating/not removing the meds for at least 3 days after you see the last spot disappear. The foam you see in the tank may be due to the medications or Stress Coat, if you are using it (or any similar product that says it replaces the fishes natural slime coat). You won't see ich spores in the water. It could be planaria, although those usually appear much more worm-like. It could also be some kind of hard water deposit or something from the gravel. It could possibly be some kind of reaction in the water from the medicines.

Should i take out my charcoal filter pad or leave it in ...

Should i take out my charcoal filter pad or leave it in while medicating fish? i'm using Quik-Cure & says to only use 2x in 48hr period? aftr that can i use more? is there a better medication for ich?

I have used Stress Coat, would a water change after all spots are gone help rid of the foam/bubbles? Cause if i stop my bubbler the foam/bubbles seem to stop.

Also while i am asking questions, some of my fish seem to hang out about 1inch below surface & a few hang out above/in betweek the suction cups of my heater. I dont know why they do this, my heater is set to 75-80. i have cover for my guppies, hut, plants..

You should take the charcoal out while medicating, as it will remove the medicines from the water. I don't know what kind of filter you have, but we always keep a spare filter cartridge without charcoal around so we can still have some filtration when medicating.

You should follow the directions on the medicine, but make sure you don't have carbon in the tank. I don't know what the medicine says about water changes after treatment, either. I would wait at least 3 days after the last dose, unless the instructions say otherwise. There is a very useful article about ich here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php

The foam is probably caused by the Stress Coat. It's not a problem, and it will go away when you change water. Usually when you have the amount of Stress Coat to help with disease it will cause that foam.

It's a good idea to keep your bubbler working while you are medicating, as some meds will make less oxygen available for the fish (which could be why they are hanging at the surface). Medicating in general, and when fish are sick, they tend to act a little strangely.
